Sweet Lew’s BBQ Review – A Charlotte Staple That Delivers Big Flavor
When we pulled up to Sweet Lew’s BBQ, we could immediately tell this place had character. From the laid-back atmosphere to the welcoming staff and steady flow of locals, everything about the restaurant feels like a true neighborhood BBQ joint. The spot has built a strong reputation around Charlotte, and we were excited to see how it stacked up when we finally made our visit. Overall, it delivered a memorable meal packed with flavor and personality.
The meats were the highlight of the visit. The brisket and ribs stood out right away with bold seasoning, beautiful bark, and a rich smoke presence that came through in every bite. The brisket was tender and juicy, sliced perfectly with great texture and flavor. The ribs had excellent balance with a clean bite and strong seasoning profile. The pulled pork was still solid and flavorful, though it didn’t quite reach the same elite level as the brisket and ribs. Even so, the overall meat quality showed impressive consistency and skill from the pit.
The sauce selection and sides helped round out the meal nicely. The mustard and rib sauces added great contrast and complemented the meats without overpowering them. The sides were another strong point, with chili-style baked beans bringing a creative and hearty twist, fresh slaw offering balance, and hush puppies delivering standout flavor and texture. The sweet tea was the only item that didn’t fully match the strength of the rest of the meal, but it was a minor drawback.
Beyond the food, the atmosphere added to the experience. Watching fresh meat sliced at the counter creates an authentic BBQ feel, and the lively, welcoming environment makes it a place you want to spend time enjoying your meal. The staff helped create a relaxed and friendly vibe that reflects classic Carolina barbecue culture. After breaking down each category on the Pit Stop Scorecard, Sweet Lew’s earned a strong 90.25 overall rating, making it a must-visit BBQ destination in the Charlotte area.
