Dating back to the 1960s, this longtime local favorite delivers an old-school diner feel the moment you walk through the door. From the vintage atmosphere to the simple, no-frills menu, College Barbecue has stayed true to its roots—and that’s exactly what makes it special.

The menu focuses on classic North Carolina pulled pork, prepared with a simple salt-and-pepper approach and cooked to a texture that allows for either sliced or chopped pork. We opted for chopped and appreciated that it wasn’t chopped too fine, leaving nice, meaty pieces throughout. The pork and sauce paired well, offering solid flavor without trying to reinvent tradition. While the sauce isn’t the best we’ve had in western NC, it complements the meat nicely and fits the style of the place.

Sides were straightforward and nostalgic. The baked beans were basic but pleasant, the hush puppies were well-cooked with a crisp exterior and soft center, and the red vinegar-based slaw—normally not our favorite—was the best version we’ve had in that category so far. Sweet tea was balanced and drinkable, and the crinkle-cut fries were cooked perfectly, especially for a classic diner-style BBQ joint.

What really stands out at College Barbecue is the experience. Locals fill the dining room, staff are friendly and familiar with customers, and the place feels like a snapshot of BBQ culture from decades past. While it may not crack our Top 25 due to its simplicity, it’s absolutely worth a visit for anyone interested in authentic, old-school North Carolina barbecue and the history behind it.
