Hannah's BBQ South, Granite Falls NC

Hannah’s BBQ in Granite Falls, North Carolina, turned out to be one of the most surprising stops on our journey. Located in a small strip mall just behind a McDonald’s, it’s easy to overlook at first glance. But once you step inside, the smell of real wood smoke immediately lets you know this place means business. The dining room has a cozy, Southern feel with touches of barbecue history on the walls, and you can see straight into the kitchen as soon as you walk in. While their smoker appears to be built indoors, the smoke coming off the food tells the story—this is old-school barbecue done with care.
We sampled a wide spread of the menu, including pulled pork, brisket, ribs, smoked chicken, and a full lineup of sides. The pulled pork was a standout, with a strong smoke presence, a well-balanced dry rub, and a light mix of sauce that didn’t overpower the meat. The brisket was juicy and cooked properly, though it leaned mild in flavor and didn’t quite hit the “write home about it” level. Ribs sparked a little friendly disagreement between us—one of us loved the bite and flavor, while the other preferred them just a touch more tender—but both agreed the seasoning and sweetness were on point.
The smoked chicken ended up being the sleeper hit of the visit. Juicy, smoky, and easy to pull right off the bone, it was a table favorite and something we’d absolutely drive back for on its own. On the sides, Hannah’s delivered above-average results across the board. The hush puppies were especially impressive—crispy on the outside, tender and slightly sweet inside—and paired perfectly with their house barbecue sauce. The baked beans were thick, smoky, and saucy without being overly sweet, and the Brunswick stew was hearty, chunky, and one of the better versions we’ve had so far.
Overall, Hannah’s BBQ was a genuine surprise and a place we’d gladly return to if we’re ever back in the Granite Falls or Lenoir area. It may not chase trends or flashy barbecue styles, but it doesn’t need to. What it offers is consistency, strong smoke flavor, and a well-rounded menu that respects barbecue tradition while still delivering quality across the plate. Hannah’s earns its spot on our Top 25 list as a solid, dependable barbecue stop that’s absolutely worth the visit.
