Sweet Lew's BBQ, Charlotte NC

Our visit to Sweet Lew’s BBQ started as part of a fun night out in Charlotte while heading to a live show. With plenty of buzz surrounding this spot, we decided it was the perfect opportunity to see if the hype matched the experience. We arrived later in the evening, knowing barbecue is often best earlier in the day, but from the moment we walked in, the atmosphere immediately stood out. The restaurant features a lively counter-service setup with a bar attached and one of the most unique décor elements we’ve seen — ball caps hanging across the ceiling, adding personality and character to the space. Watching the staff slice meats fresh behind the counter while guests moved through the line created a fast-paced but welcoming environment.
We sampled a wide variety of meats and sides to get the full experience, starting with the ribs, which were a highlight of the meal. The ribs featured a flavorful spicy rub with excellent tenderness and a satisfying bite that held together perfectly. Their tangy rib sauce quickly became one of our favorites and paired beautifully with the seasoning. The pulled pork delivered strong smoke flavor with chunky, well-prepared pieces that showed off the quality of the meat. The brisket was another standout, offering a beautiful bark, bold pepper flavor, and impressive juiciness. Paired with their tangy mustard sauce, the brisket showcased the creativity and balance of flavors that Sweet Lew’s brings to their barbecue program.
The sides added even more depth to the visit. The chili-influenced baked beans offered bold flavor and smokiness rather than traditional sweetness, making them unique and memorable. The coleslaw featured layered spices and texture that went beyond standard barbecue slaw, while the hush puppies were some of the best we’ve had — crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and perfect for sampling their lineup of sauces. While the sweet tea fell short compared to the food, the overall meal impressed us with thoughtful flavor layering, high-quality meats, and an inventive smoking approach that blends multiple wood varieties. Sweet Lew’s easily earns a place on our Top 25 list and is a spot we fully plan to revisit earlier in the day to experience it fresh off the smoker.
PIT Score 90.25/100
Taste 28.5/30
Strong overall flavor across all meats, especially the ribs and brisket. Excellent seasoning balance and high-quality meat slightly held back by pulled pork not quite reaching elite tier compared to top competitors.
Sides 8.25/10
Unique chili-style baked beans, flavorful slaw, and exceptional hush puppies elevated the meal. Sweet tea was the only weak spot.
Sauce 12.75/15
Creative and flavorful sauce lineup, especially the rib and mustard sauces. Great balance and layering, but limited variety kept it just short of a perfect score.
Atmosphere & Experience 14/15
Fun, energetic environment with a unique setup and fresh meat slicing at the counter. Great vibe and personality, with only a slight deduction for visiting later in the evening instead of peak freshness.
Smoke Presence & Pit Work 14.75/15
Outstanding smoke presence with deep, rich flavor and excellent bark development, particularly on brisket and pork. Nearly flawless execution.
Juiciness & texture 12/15
Meats were consistently juicy and tender across the board. Brisket and ribs were perfectly cooked and maintained moisture.
