Midwood Smokehouse, Huntersville NC

Street view of Midwood Smokehouse in Huntersville, North Carolina, with a welcoming entrance and BBQ-themed signage.

In their third North Carolina barbecue review, the Pit Stop crew visits Midwood Smokehouse in Huntersville, North Carolina, located in an upscale shopping area that surprisingly complements the restaurant’s polished yet laid-back honky-tonk vibe, complete with vintage décor, old country music, and a visually striking rotisserie-style hickory-fired pit visible from the dining room. The variety and consistency stood out most at Midwood, with a broad menu where every item delivered solid quality, even if none were absolute showstoppers across the board. Side highlights included flavorful baked beans with bell pepper, pulled pork, and a subtle chili kick; rich, Southern-style baked mac and cheese with a crispy topping; excellent hush puppy balls with a crunchy exterior and soft center; and a standout Mexican street corn special that impressed with its creamy heat. The pulled pork had great smoke and color but needed sauce to shine, while the brisket was tender, juicy, pepper-forward, and evenly cooked with a beautiful smoke ring. The ribs emerged as the star of the meal—well-trimmed St. Louis–style, perfectly cooked to bite clean off the bone, and finished with Midwood’s signature sauce—making them the best ribs reviewed so far. Opinions differed on the cheddar jalapeño sausage, with one reviewer enjoying it and the other finding it overly cheesy and light on meat flavor. Strong customer service, generous portions, kid-friendly options, and an impressive lineup of sauces—including Eastern, Western, Midwood, mustard, and sweet habanero—rounded out the experience. Overall, Midwood Smokehouse proved to be the most well-rounded and consistently good barbecue spot reviewed so far, earning a definite return visit and a strong recommendation for anyone in the Charlotte or Columbia areas.
