Barbecue Center: A Happy Accident in Lexington, NC

Sometimes the best barbecue stops are the ones you didn’t plan.

We headed to Lexington, North Carolina, with Lexington Barbecue on our minds. But when we arrived, the building was dark and the doors were closed. Suddenly, our barbecue trip needed a backup plan.

That change of plans brought us to Barbecue Center, and what started as a disappointment turned into one delicious discovery.

A Packed House Right Before Closing

You know a place has something going for it when you walk in about 15 minutes before closing and the dining room is still packed. Even more people were coming in behind us.

Inside, Lexington Barbecue Festival posters lined the walls, giving us plenty to look at and adding to that old-school barbecue atmosphere. The place was busy, but the service moved quickly. We were in and out in about 20 minutes without feeling like we’d sacrificed a good meal.

Pork That Delivered

The pork was the star of the visit. It had that classic Lexington-style flavor, a good smoke presence, and—our biggest takeaway—plenty of moisture.

Late in the day, you might expect barbecue to have dried out a little. That wasn’t our experience here. The pork was tender, juicy, and flavorful before we even added the sauce.

And that sauce deserved some attention of its own.

They brought their Lexington-style dip to the table in a Styrofoam cup. A whole cup of sauce? Yes, please. It complemented the pork without overpowering it, and we liked it enough to bring home a jar.

Don’t Overlook the Chicken

The smoked chicken also made a strong impression. The meat came away from the bones easily, and the skin had a noticeable sage flavor that worked beautifully without becoming overpowering.

By the end of the meal, there wasn’t much left on that plate besides bones. That pretty much tells the story.

Classic Sides and Standout Hush Puppies

We tried the white slaw, baked beans, and potato salad. The slaw was creamy and straightforward, and the potato salad was a solid, familiar side. The baked beans edged ahead for us thanks to their seasoning and flavor.

These were good, classic accompaniments that let the meat take center stage.

The hush puppies deserved their own shoutout: crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside, and very tasty.

The Banana Split Will Have to Wait

Throughout the meal, we watched other tables tackle enormous banana splits. These things looked like a group project, and we didn’t see anyone finish one.

We were too full to order dessert, so we can’t give you a taste review yet. But we’re already talking about a return trip—and recruiting some help.

Our Final Verdict

Barbecue Center earned 92.75 out of 100, putting it at number five on our barbecue list at the time of this review.

Juicy pork, delicious chicken, a sauce worth taking home, and a lively dining room made this much more than a backup stop. It was a place we’d gladly visit again.

Pit Stop crew, have you been to Barbecue Center? And has anyone out there actually finished that banana split? We need to know.
