Sometimes the best barbecue spots are the ones sitting right around the corner that you just never stop to try. That was exactly the case for us with The Crazy Pig in Davidson, North Carolina.
We had heard people mention Crazy Pig multiple times, and after driving through Davidson more times than we can count, we finally decided it was time to pull in and see what all the hype was about. After this visit, we can confidently say this place absolutely deserves the attention it gets.
First Impressions
Crazy Pig sits just off Main Street near Davidson College and fits perfectly into the charm of downtown Davidson. The town itself has a relaxed upscale feel to it, almost like a smaller inland version of Charleston, with walkable streets, local shops, and a laid-back atmosphere.
Walking into Crazy Pig, the restaurant immediately feels welcoming. The interior has a rustic saloon-style vibe with old wood throughout the dining area that gives it character without trying too hard. It felt like a place where locals hang out regularly, and those are usually the spots worth paying attention to.
One thing we really appreciated was the hospitality. The owner was there helping guests, bringing out food, and talking with customers. That personal touch always makes a difference.
The Sauce Lineup Stole the Show
Before we even get into the meats, we have to talk about the sauces because this may be the best overall sauce lineup we’ve had so far on our North Carolina barbecue journey.
Crazy Pig offers six different sauces, and honestly, every single one paired well with something on the plate.
The standout for us was the sweet house sauce. It had that classic sweet barbecue flavor that instantly makes you want to dip everything into it. Our daughter loved it so much we even asked if they sold bottles to take home.
The habanero mango sauce was another surprise hit. It balanced sweet and heat perfectly without becoming overpowering. You got the mango upfront, then the habanero slowly built on the back end.
Their mustard sauce also deserves a mention. It paired especially well with the smoked chicken and had a great peppery finish that kept it from tasting too sweet.
This is a place that clearly puts thought into their sauces, and it shows.
The Meats
We ordered the three-meat platter with brisket, pulled pork, and smoked chicken.
Brisket
The brisket ended up being one of the biggest surprises we’ve had yet.
Visually, it looked slightly overdone because it fell apart when picked up, but the flavor completely changed our minds after the first bite. The smoke flavor, pepper, salt balance, and overall richness were outstanding. Even though the texture was a little softer than expected, it may honestly be the tastiest brisket we’ve had so far during our North Carolina BBQ tour.
Pulled Pork
This was the one category where we split opinions a little.
One of us thought the pulled pork was juicy, smoky, and full of bark flavor when mixed together properly with the vinegar sauce. The other thought some bites leaned dry and needed the sauce to really shine.
That said, the vinegar sauce paired extremely well with it and brought out a lot of the flavor profile that makes North Carolina barbecue special.
Smoked Chicken
The smoked chicken was excellent.
Crazy Pig serves a full leg quarter, and the chicken was incredibly tender with great smoke flavor throughout. The skin had a nice seasoning blend with hints of paprika and sage, and every sauce we tried worked with it.
The mustard sauce with the chicken was especially good.
The Sides
The clear winner here was the potato salad.
It was creamy, tangy, loaded with flavor, and easily one of the best potato salads we’ve had so far. The addition of dill, celery seed, and red potatoes with the skins left on gave it a homemade feel while still elevating it above your standard barbecue side.
The baked beans and coleslaw were solid traditional sides that complemented the meal well, while the shoestring fries became the perfect vehicle for trying all the sauces.
Final Thoughts
Crazy Pig ended up being one of the bigger surprises on our barbecue journey so far. Between the downtown Davidson atmosphere, excellent hospitality, creative sauce lineup, flavorful meats, and standout potato salad, this place left a strong impression on us.
It is the kind of barbecue restaurant that blends traditional North Carolina barbecue with a more modern craft barbecue approach without losing its identity.
